Boot time

Windows 7 takes about 30 seconds to start and 15 seconds for shutdown. Windows 8 takes 6 seconds to start and 3 seconds for shutdown.  As we can see there is a clear winner, the newer OS is obviously better optimized.

Compatibility

Windows 7 is totally compatible with all applications, new or old. Even applications from the days of DOS are able to run on this OS (after third party software). At the other hand Windows 8 is not compatible with some applications, namely, specific games, or slightly old applications.

Touch screen support

Both operating systems have Touch screen support. But Windows 8 is specially designed for Touch based Pc’s, therefore it is a far better experience to use Windows 8 on a touchscreen tablet or monitor.

ISO file

Windows 7 doesn't have any type of ISO file opener, in Windows 8 IS0 files can be opened directly. This is mostly not very much useful for the average user, but if you need it, its there in Windows 8.

Charm Screen and Lock screen

Windows 7 doesn’t have a Charm screen but a lock screen, at the other hand Windows 8 has a charm screen and lock screen, but since Windows 7 was never designed for touch based used, these 'gimmicks' seem useful in the eyes of a Windows 7 user.

Price

Windows 7 was a master piece, and simply visually, better for most of the people. Windows 8 was simplistic and similar to Windows Phone 8. The prices suggest the same thing.
Windows 7 = $350
Windows 8 = $200
